Happy New Year and welcome 2019! As is tradition, we’re bringing in the new year with a list of trends to look for in the next twelve months. This blog is the rundown of what the marketing world should look out for — look for social media trends, IoT trends, and new venues for marketing. And let us know your thoughts in the comments.

eMarketer, “How Many Marketers Use Pinterest?

eMarketer’s Ross Benes reports on how marketers will use Pinterest going into 2019. Already, the number of marketers using Pinterest has increased from 29.1% to 31.9% in the past year. Pinterest’s improved search capabilities seem to be driving this increase, and Benes notes that “In February 2018, Pinterest reported that there were 600 million monthly visual searches on its platform, a 140% increase from the previous year’s 250 million.” The one hurdle that’s likely holding Pinterest back — both from becoming a major social media platform and a popular option for advertisers — is it’s heavy skew toward female users. However, over the past four years, the percentage of male users has increased from 7.4% to 21.3%.

DMN, “Story Time At LinkedIn

Following Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook, LinkedIn is now introducing stories on its platform. The rollout is currently only available for American college students, and allows users to post stories under a “Campus Playlist,” where they can be viewed for one week. DMN reporter Ariella Brown corresponded with college student Cammy Okmin about how students are using this new feature. She said that LinkedIn stories offer an informal way for users to express their personalities. Okmin says, “LinkedIn is often seen as being all about business, but I think students (myself included) like the story element because it allows their network to see what they are like on a day-to-day basis without having to put up a ‘professional front.’ I think it makes for more authentic and relatable content which can be just as important as the informative content.” If LinkedIn stories catch on, we can expect LinkedIn advertising to get involved too, so stay tuned for how college users are picking up on the new feature.

NETWORLDWORLD, “Six IoT Predictions For 2019

Writer Frederic Paul kicked off 2019 with his predictions for how the Internet of Things will likely evolve over the coming year.

  • We’ll see a growth in IoT device adoption, to about 18 – 20%.
  • 5G networks will have a huge impact on the capabilities of most IoT devices.
  • With more devices, we’ll see more cyber attacks, and security will become ever more important,
  • The big cloud services will continue to get bigger, since smaller companies will, “flock to them for the promise of simplification at scale.”
  • Brands who can’t compete will opt out of IoT altogether.
  • There’s going to be a shortage IoT skills in the job market.

Only time will tell!

Business Insider, “Your Brand Is Ignoring Its Most Captive Audience

In a preview of Business Insider’s longer Podcast Report, Shelagh Dolan runs through the compelling reasons your brand should probably advertise on Podcasts. Podcast ad market size reached $659 million, but “consider for a moment that TV and radio ad spend are already at $69 billion and $18 billion respectively, and this figure suddenly feels tiny.” This means, Dolan says, that the medium is underutilized and prime for growth. Further, most podcast listeners complete each episode, and few skip over ads. Podcasts give you a receptive audience, and looking forward should be a popular venue for marketers this year.
